Still no word from JRA on Cedar and Uranium roads pothole crisis
Maj Saffari says repeated pothole repairs on Cedar and Uranium roads are wasting taxpayers’ money, and despite repeated media queries, authorities have yet to respond.
“Can you confirm how many times Cedar and Uranium roads have been repaired since July 2022, and why a more durable solution has not been implemented? What mechanisms are in place to hold contractors accountable when repairs fail? And what is the long-term strategy to ensure these roads are properly reconstructed?” These three questions were some of those posed to the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) three weeks ago regarding how potholes are continuously being repaired on the same spot on Cedar and Uranium roads in Fourways.

To date, despite repeated follow-ups, no response has been received. The questions were submitted on behalf of Fourways resident Maj Saffari, who has expressed frustration over what he describes as: “Endless patchwork repairs, that do not last.”

According to Saffari, the same stretches of road have been patched at least six times since 2022, yet potholes quickly reappear, especially after rainfall or heavy truck usage.
He argues that this cycle of short-lived repairs points to poor workmanship, wasted taxpayer money, and a lack of accountability by JRA, the provincial department, and their contractors. “It feels like money is being poured into the same potholes over and over again, without any intention of finding a proper fix.”
Further questions put to the department included whether contractors face consequences for poor work, and whether the repeated failures suggest deeper structural problems with the road. Residents also wanted to know if Cedar and Uranium roads are earmarked for permanent reconstruction, rather than ongoing quick fixes. However, it all seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
