The little learners arrived in stunning cultural outfits, proudly representing their heritage, while staff joined in the celebration by dressing in traditional attire, creating a warm and festive atmosphere throughout the school.

A highlight of the day was the sharing of a traditional lunch of vetkoek and mince, enjoyed with delight by both children and staff alike.
“Heritage Day is such an important celebration. It reminds us of the richness of our cultural traditions and allows our children to feel proud of their own heritage while learning to appreciate and respect the beauty of others. It’s about creating a sense of unity, belonging, and shared pride in who we are as a community,” said Bianca Durrant, principal of Junior College Fourways.

The celebration went beyond costumes and food. A special cooking class was hosted for the children’s helpers and nannies, giving them the opportunity to learn how to prepare the school’s signature mac and cheese.

“This interactive session not only shared culinary traditions but also showed appreciation for the essential care and support these caregivers provide every day,” said Durrant.
The early Heritage Day celebration at Junior College Fourways was a joyful and meaningful event, filled with music, laughter, and a true sense of community.
“This celebration gave everyone, children, staff, and helpers alike a chance to celebrate their roots, share stories, and build pride in the diverse tapestry that makes South Africa, and their school, so special.”
