Douglasdale SAPS calls for community support with their toy drive for kids in need
The Douglasdale SAPS and CPF are calling on the community to help bring the magic of Christmas to over 200 children in need through their annual toy drive, in partnership with Vukuzenzele HIV/AIDS Multipurpose & Community Centre.
The festive season is a time for giving. This year, the Douglasdale SAPS and Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) invite residents to help spread Christmas cheer through their Christmas toy drive, in support of Vukuzenzele HIV/AIDS Multipurpose & Community Centre in Kya Sands Central Pipeline.
Community members are encouraged to donate new or gently used toys, for children aged from infancy to 13 years. Donations can be dropped off at the Douglasdale SAPS Community Service Centre between 08:00 and 15:00, Monday to Sunday, until the cut-off date of November 23.

Warrant Officer Nicholas Mokwena, of Douglasdale SAPS, explained that the project came from what officers saw during visits to the local informal settlement. “We discovered that many of the children are living in poor conditions, and lack basic things that other kids have. We decided, along with our partners, that we can at least bring a smile to their faces.”
He added that the project aims, not only to help children, but also to bring the community together. “By donating a toy, we’re helping to achieve one of our goals, bringing the community together and uplifting it. There are about 208 children in total who will benefit from the drive, including 80 orphans from nearby areas.”

This year’s initiative follows previous community support efforts by Douglasdale SAPS and CPF, including food parcel drives. Mokwena mentioned that, this time, the focus is on bringing joy to the youngest members of the community. “Last year, we distributed food parcels, this year we wanted to do something different, something that would make each child smile.”
The toys will be given out in early December at the Vukuzenzele Multipurpose Centre, bringing a touch of magic to the children’s festive season.
