Teddython 2025 smashes target, raises over R30m for communities

Generosity, laughter, and a surprise 'arrest' marked this year’s Hot 102.7FM Teddython fundraiser in Fourways, with donations far exceeding expectations.

Hot 102.7FM’s annual Teddython fundraiser has once again shown the power of collective giving, raising over R30m, well above the R20m target for 2025.

The event, held at Papachinos in Broadacres on October 30, combined fun, community spirit, and heartfelt philanthropy in support of people and animals across South Africa.

A highlight of the day came when actress and philanthropist Carolyn Steyn was playfully ‘arrested’ by Brigadier Veeshani Arikum and Warrant Officer Nicholas Mokwena, from Douglasdale Police Station, for not pledging money toward the fundraiser.

Steyn was handcuffed and jokingly questioned before being bailed out for R500 000 by her family. She later added another R100 000 donation to the cause.

The Douglasdale police also joined in, contributing R1 000 to the cause.

“It’s become an annual tradition of generosity that unites our listeners, partners, and community,” said Lloyd Madurai, managing director of Hot 102.7FM. “Each year, we’re blown away by the scale of giving. It’s a reminder of the power of collective kindness.”

The fundraiser is driven by Hot Cares, the station’s charitable arm, which focuses on four key pillars: Humanitarian, education, medical, and animal welfare.

Over the years, initiatives have included supporting children’s homes and early learning centres, funding vital medical interventions, empowering students, and assisting animal welfare organisations.

“Animal welfare is close to our heart,” said Carmen Rocha, managing director of Hot Cares.

“We’ve provided a trailer for Rhino Connect, to assist injured rhinos, and supported sterilisation campaigns. Funds raised this year will continue to make a tangible difference for both people and animals.”

Even for those unable to attend in person, support for the cause remains open. Donations of any size, whether once-off, recurring, or in-kind, can be made online via www.hot1027.co.za.

“Every donation, no matter the size, helps us reach another person, family, animal, or community in need,” Rocha added.

“Year after year, our listeners show up, not just with donations, but with open hearts. The Teddython is their event as much as it is ours – and their belief in making a difference is what keeps the spirit of giving alive.”
