Ward 94 councillor David Foley, in partnership with JMPD, the Lonehill Fire Station team, and the Fourways Improvement District’s Fidelity team, recently joined forces to remove illegal food trailers and A-frame advertising trailers cluttering the roadside.

The by-law enforcement drive came ahead of the planting of 3 000 trees along Winnie Mandela Drive, part of an effort to beautify the area.
Foley explained what prompted this coordinated operation, “The planting of trees on Winnie Mandela Drive initiated the by-law operation. We removed A-frame trailers and the food trailers, which are both illegal on provincial roads.”
Food trailer owners had been given prior warnings to comply. “The Region A chief superintendent informed me they [trailer owners] were called to remove their trailers. Food trailers are supposed to be towed away at the end of the day as per the by-laws.”

While there have been no recent accidents, Foley noted that in the past these obstructions have caused visibility issues for motorists. “They have certainly caused some accidents at the Winnie Mandela Drive and Robert Bruce Road intersection some time back.”

With the area now cleared, Foley said residents could soon look forward to a much-improved streetscape. “After the trees are planted, a new garden and natural view will be experienced along Winnie Mandela Drive, and not advertising sign pollution. Safety is automatically improved as visibility is improved.”

Foley also urged businesses and individuals to familiarise themselves with city by-laws. “By-laws are in place for a reason. Please contact the City of Joburg outdoor advertising team for any queries. Ward 94, with an active councillor, is determined to ensure the law is known and enforced accordingly; ignorance of the law is no excuse.”
