Douglasdale takes safety to the streets as 16 days of activism begin

A morning vehicle checkpoint along Winnie Mandela Drive became more than just a roadblock; it marked the community’s united stand against violence toward women and children.

A strong show of unity and commitment to community safety unfolded on November 27.
Douglasdale SAPS, the gender-based violence (GBV) brigade, and the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) came together for a co-ordinated event along Winnie Mandela Drive to launch the 16 days of activism campaign against violence towards women and children.

The operation focused on direct engagement with motorists, creating an opportunity to promote safety awareness while reinforcing visible policing in the area.

Freda Boiles, the CPF’s public relations officer, said many road users welcomed the initiative, and expressed sincere appreciation for the continued crime-prevention efforts taking place in the precinct. Their positive feedback highlighted the importance of collaborative operations, particularly as the festive season approaches.

CPF members and the GBV brigade used the opportunity to distribute festive season safety brochures, provide information on GBV support services, and share emergency contact details with motorists.

Boiles said during the operation, they noted, with concern, that many valuable items, including mobile phones, laptops, and handbags, were clearly visible inside vehicles. Motorists were urged to ensure their belongings are kept out of sight to reduce the risk of opportunistic crime.

On behalf of the Douglasdale CPF, Boiles extended appreciation to Douglasdale SAPS for inviting the forum to participate in the operation, and for its continued commitment to community safety. “We appreciate the community’s support and encourage residents to stay vigilant.”
