A deadly collision at Winnie Mandela Drive and Sunrise Avenue claimed a man's life and sparked urgent warnings from JMPD for motorists to obey traffic signals.

A motorcyclist was killed in a collision at a busy Fourways intersection on December 8, prompting a formal investigation by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

The fatal accident occurred shortly after 10:30am at the intersection of Winnie Mandela Drive and Sunrise Avenue. The crash involved a white Big Boy motorcycle and a white Toyota LDV Hilux.

According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the rider, an adult male of Burundian nationality, sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene.

His body was transported to the Hillbrow Mortuary. The driver of the Toyota Hilux, also an adult male, was not injured.

Fihla confirmed the preliminary findings. “Initial reports allege that the motorcycle, travelling west on Sunrise Avenue, failed to stop for a red traffic light and collided with the Toyota LDV, which was travelling south on Winnie Mandela Drive,” he said.

JMPD officers and emergency responders attended to the scene, with the area being temporarily cordoned off while officials assessed the circumstances around the crash.

Fihla further confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Douglasdale SAPS.

“The JMPD urges all motorists to strictly adhere to traffic signals and speed limits to prevent further loss of life on our roads,” he added.
