Bushwillow Road calms down after 30 accidents in 1 year
After repeated crashes and rising safety concerns, Fourways Gardens Estate has funded and facilitated speed humps, kerbing, and safer crossings along Bushwillow Road.
Fourways Gardens Residential Estate has long been a sanctuary for families, offering a calm and secure environment within its boundaries.
However, the estate has faced growing challenges from speeding motorists along Bushwillow Road, with reckless driving resulting in roughly thirty accidents between 2024 and 2025.
Six of these incidents caused damage to the estate’s perimeter wall, private properties, and surrounding council infrastructure. Speeds of up to 90km/h have been recorded on this stretch, putting residents, and road users, at significant risk.

“Once outside the estate’s boundary walls, residents are immediately exposed to the dangers of high-speed traffic,” said Charlene Marlin, manager of Fourways Gardens Estate.
She noted that the contrast between the safety inside the estate and the hazards just beyond its gates highlighted the urgent need for intervention. High volumes of pedestrians and cyclists rely on Bushwillow Road daily to commute to school, work, and home, leaving them particularly vulnerable to reckless driving.
To address the ongoing risks, residents petitioned for immediate traffic-calming measures. In response, the estate’s homeowners’ association proactively engaged with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to explore practical solutions, including the installation of speed humps, kerbing, and the creation of safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists. Now, almost a year later, that dream has become a reality, with the installation of the calming measures on the road.
Marlin expressed gratitude for the instrumental support of Ward 94 councillor David Foley, whose assistance and recognition of the broader community benefit helped advance approvals and discussions.

Although the project required navigating petitions, wayleaves, technical proposals, and city approvals over the course of nearly a year, the estate remained committed to seeing it through. “The safety of our community, and all road users travelling along Bushwillow Road, could not be compromised.” She emphasised that the long-term, sustainable solution would provide meaningful and lasting improvements for the area.
In addition to safety enhancements, the estate focused on improving the overall aesthetic of the road. The installation of kerbing and walkways prevents further erosion of the road surface, creating a more stable environment for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Marlins extended thanks to the community for their patience throughout the installation of the speed humps and kerbing. “Fourways Gardens Estate believes strongly in the value of public/private partnerships, and the positive impact they can have on neighbourhood infrastructure and safety. Our role extends beyond our boundary walls. We are committed to contributing to the improvement, safety, and well-being of the broader community.”
