Fourways Gardens goes beyond pink this year for breast cancer awareness campaign

The estate took its annual pink trees campaign a step further this October, hosting a talk for domestic workers and caregivers on practical health information relating to breast cancer.

The Fourways Gardens community once again turned pink this October as part of the annual pink trees for breast cancer awareness campaign. This year, the initiative went beyond its eye-catching tree decorations, by hosting a special breast cancer awareness talk for domestic workers, nannies, and caregivers in the estate.

“We wanted to do more than just decorate our trees this year,” said Francois Grobler, communications and events manager of the estate. “These ladies are the backbone of so many households, yet often have limited access to practical health information. This talk was about empowerment and awareness.”

The session welcomed about thirty women, who gathered with enthusiasm to learn from the Reach for Recovery Johannesburg team, Bessie Tselapedi, Lebogang Kekana, and Vicky Mothibi.

Rather than a formal lecture, the facilitators led a warm, interactive discussion, encouraging questions and demonstrating how to perform breast self-checks. They also explained screening procedures, treatment options, and shared powerful stories of survival and recovery.

“The energy in the room was incredible,” said Grobler. “You could see the curiosity and relief as myths were replaced with facts. It was emotional, but deeply uplifting.”

The event was made possible through the generosity of sponsors and residents. Paula Lucas, from UniQ Properties, covered refreshments and goodie bags, while Party Palace provided discounted helium and balloons, adding a festive feel to the venue. Bothwell Chevogo, from PostNet Fourways Gardens, printed all the posters and flyers free of charge, and Kelly Lombard’s Pancake Pantry delighted guests with complimentary pancakes.

Estate manager Charlene Marlin also attended the event, and expressed her continued support for community upliftment and charitable causes.

In closing, the Fourways Gardens Homeowners Association (HOA) presented a R2 000 donation to Reach for Recovery, recognising their vital work in supporting those affected by breast cancer.

Reflecting on the busy day, Grobler added: “It’s heartwarming to see how our community comes together, not just to raise awareness, but to genuinely make a difference. It truly takes a village.”

The event served as a reminder that behind every pink ribbon, and wrapped tree, lies a message of hope, compassion, and unity within the Fourways Gardens community.
