A year of impact for Starfish Greathearts Foundation

As the festive season draws near, the Starfish Greathearts Foundation celebrates a year of progress, compassion, and community partnerships that have transformed thousands of young lives across South Africa.

Celebrating the festive season, the Starfish Greathearts Foundation looks back on a year full of growth, compassion, and significant achievements. The foundation is dedicated to providing life, hope, and opportunities to orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa. It makes a real difference through partnerships with community-based organisations.

“This year flew by quickly, and we enjoyed the ups and downs along the way. We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished together with our partners and supporters,” said Poonam Dwarkaram, operations manager at Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

From literacy programmess to health and wellness initiatives, Starfish’s highlights for 2025 show the foundation’s commitment to creating brighter futures:

  • Completed Early Literacy training, with all community organisations receiving certificates.
  • Celebrated Mandela Day by improving partner centres for the benefit of children.
  • Hosted a World Food Day event, distributing food parcels to vulnerable families.
  • Won the Shelley O’Carroll Literacy National Award for supporting early childhood literacy.
  • Distributed over 20 000 sanitary pads to women and girls.
  • Provided over 300 000 meals to children in care centres.
  • Gave out 938 school shoes, socks, and stationery packs to learners.
  • Conducted over 12 000 TB and HIV tests and consulted over 17 000 children through the Wellness Wagons project.
  • Supported over 140 mothers through the maternal care programme and 500 beneficiaries through a mental health partnership with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.

As the organisation looks ahead to 2026, its mission remains clear: to expand its reach and deepen its impact. The plans include partnering with more community-based organisations, increasing health and wellness services, growing food gardens, and enhancing maternal care and capacity-building programmes.

“There is so much we want to do and so many communities that need our help. We cannot do this without the support of our funders, patrons, donors, volunteers, and our amazing team.”
