Fourways-based sorority brings comfort to neonatal intensive care unit families at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital
The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has extended compassion beyond the suburb, offering care and hope to vulnerable families at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Families with critically ill and premature infants at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital received much-needed comfort and encouragement through a charitable donation led by a Broadacres-based organisation in Fourways.
On December 23, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Psi Tau Omega Chapter, which is based in Broadacres, Fourways, distributed 25 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) care packages to parents of infants in the hospital.
Support was also extended to mothers staying at the hospital’s mother lodger facility during extended treatment periods.

The initiative was made possible through a generous donation from Pinnacle Equipment Company, a family-owned HVAC business based in Indianapolis, in the United States.
In addition to the care packages, a tree was planted in honour of each child through One Tree Planted, symbolising life, hope, and growth.
Founded in 1890, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, commonly known as Joburg Gen, is one of South Africa’s oldest public hospitals and serves vulnerable families from across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
