Author of Unlocked unlocks secrets to getting your story out there

Make publish a book your 2026 resolution. Lisa Sukdev says self-publishing gives writers the power to begin and finish their stories.

Lisa Sukdev, from Fourways, believed for a long time that writing a book was something meant for other people.

She thought it was for published authors, with agents, publishing deals, and the confidence to match, but after writing and self-publishing her book, Unlocked, she realised something that changed everything. “Your story doesn’t need permission to exist. It simply needs courage.”

Sukdev says self-publishing has created space for ordinary people with extraordinary stories to finally step forward. “You don’t need to be famous, qualified, or have it all figured out. You need a message, a willingness to start, and the commitment to keep going, even when self-doubt creeps in.”

At the heart of the process, she says, is the act of writing itself: Messy, honest, and imperfect. “Don’t wait for the perfect time or the perfect opening line. Write as you are.”

Sukdev said a story finds its shape along the way, with editing coming later. “Courage comes first.”

Once a manuscript is complete, Sukdev stresses the importance of professional editing, describing it as an essential investment rather than a luxury.

“It’s an act of respect for your work and your reader. A good editor doesn’t change your voice; they help it shine.” She adds that formatting and cover design are equally important, noting that a professional-looking book tells readers that the words inside truly matter.

Sukdev points to platforms such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark as game-changers in the publishing world. “You control your timeline, your content, your pricing, and your vision. You are no longer waiting to be chosen, you choose yourself.”

Beyond the logistics, Sukdev believes the true power of self-publishing lies in its impact on others. “Your story may change someone’s life. Your words could comfort, inspire, challenge, or heal someone you may never meet.”

Her message to aspiring writers is: “Write the truth of who you are, where you’ve been, and what you’ve learned. Writing is one of the most beautiful ways to leave something behind.

A living legacy of your voice, your heart, your humanity. Your story matters. Don’t keep it locked inside you. The world is waiting.”
