Fourways Improvement District hits key safety and urban goals in 2025

Crime is down, streets are cleaner, and Fourways is feeling safer. Just over a year into the Fourways Improvement District’s rollout, residents and businesses are already seeing the difference.

Crime trends in Fourways are looking more positive, just over a year into the rollout of the Fourways Improvement District (FID), a non-profit company launched to address various community issues.

Residents, businesses, and visitors are already experiencing improvements as the district’s approach to safety, cleanliness, and urban management takes effect.

“This year, we’ve seen a noticeable reduction in vehicle-related crime at local shopping centres, compared with previous years,” said Mikhaela Donaldson, FID spokesperson. “17 suspects have been arrested, flagged by the Vumacam system for serious crimes, including vehicle theft and murder, and illegal traders and advertising trailers have been removed through joint operations with JMPD.”

FID’s security operations are led by Fidelity Services Group, appointed after a rigorous tender process for its 68-year legacy in the security industry, long-standing footprint in Fourways, and advanced real-time protection technology.

The district is professionally managed by Local Abode Precinct Management Company, which has implemented an urban-renewal programme that strengthens law-enforcement collaboration, municipal partnerships, and co-ordination with private security teams.

“Our partnership with Vumacam and Fidelity Services Group, including nearly 50 cameras integrated into a dedicated control hub at Fourways Mall, allows us to proactively identify vehicles linked to criminal activity the moment they enter the district.”

The comprehensive programme also addresses urban-management issues, such as monitoring tampering with traffic lights and municipal infrastructure, conducting large-scale clean-ups of public spaces, and deploying fire-response units, drones, medical teams, patrol vehicles, and foot patrols.

“With the festive season approaching, Fidelity Services Group is fully prepared to maintain a secure and welcoming environment throughout greater Fourways.”

Donaldson encourages estates, complexes, and businesses not yet part of the initiative to join the FID, to benefit from a safer, cleaner, and better-managed community.

Looking ahead to 2026, the FID plans to expand its membership, and extend its services and projects.

“Through partnerships with various entities, stakeholders, residents, and levels of government, we seek to position Fourways as a leading economic, commercial, and residential hub within the City of Johannesburg.”
