Survey reveals resident anger over state of the roads in Ward 94

A resident survey, drawing nearly 200 responses, has highlighted growing frustration over road conditions, with Calderwood Road emerging as a major concern.

A resident survey, conducted by Ward 94 councillor David Foley, has painted a grim picture of road conditions in Lonehill, with frustration mounting over what residents describe as deteriorating and unsafe streets.

Foley said he recently canvassed residents about the state of roads in the ward, receiving close to 200 responses. “Residents are not happy with the state of our roads.”

He added that potholes feature prominently among the complaints raised, with the dissatisfaction sharply focused on Calderwood Road, near Concourse Crescent, a key route leading to Lonehill Park.

On December 25, Foley took to social media platform X to flag approximately 50 potholes along the stretch, tagging Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and posting photographic evidence of the damage.

The road, which saw increased traffic during the festive season, has become particularly hazardous due to recent rains. Water filling potholes made it difficult for motorists to judge their depth, raising concerns about vehicle damage and road safety for both residents and visitors.

Following the public report, a series of questions were formally directed to JRA by Fourways Review, seeking clarity on how the matter would be handled.

These included the expected response time for repairing the 50 potholes on Calderwood Road, especially given increased holiday traffic to Lonehill Park, whether any interim safety measures would be implemented while repairs are pending, and confirmation that the agency had received Foley’s report, along with an update on when repairs could be expected.

Despite multiple follow-ups, JRA did not respond to these queries.

Foley said no reference number was issued after the initial report, although he acknowledged that staffing constraints during the holiday period may have contributed to the silence.

“I will give them a little nudge. There are many roads with potholes.” Foley stressed that Calderwood Road is not an isolated case. He indicated that the issue is widespread across the ward, and hinted at plans to document the problem more comprehensively.

While road infrastructure remains a pressing concern, Foley noted that other municipal challenges continue to compound residents’ frustrations.

He cited ongoing electricity issues, with some households left without power even on Christmas.

Attempts to obtain comment from JRA were unsuccessful by the time of going to print, with the agency remaining mum despite repeated follow-ups. An update will be provided once responses are received.
