Councillor flags 50 potholes on Calderwood Road, tags JRA with proof on X

Holiday travel and daily life in Lonehill are being disrupted by infrastructure challenges, as Ward 94 David Foley pushes for answers from authorities.

It’s the festive season, but for residents and visitors of Lonehill, a popular route leading to Lonehill Park has become a bumpy, frustrating experience.

Calderwood Road, near Concourse Crescent in Lonehill, is riddled with approximately 50 potholes, according to Ward 94’s David Foley, making travel tricky, especially during the rainy season when the holes fill with water and become safety hazards.

Foley has reported the issue to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), requesting in a social media post that the potholes be logged and a reference number be assigned for follow-up on December 25.

When asked about getting a reference, Foley said none was received; however, he understood that with limited staff during the holidays, the response might be delayed.

“I will give them a little nudge today. There are many roads with potholes.” He said that Calderwood Road is just one example and suggested that next week he and Fourways Review will embark on a “pothole safari” across the ward to show the full extent of the problem.

He has also surveyed residents about road conditions. “I asked the residents about roads in their area; I have got about 200 responses. Residents are not happy with the state of our roads.”

Foley said that, while municipal entities are generally doing their jobs, overloaded services such as Eskom continue to affect residents, with some households still experiencing power outages from before Christmas to date.

“The Eskom team is onsite again doing fault finding, [and] suspect a cable fault.” The JRA media team that was initially contacted is currently out of the office.

However, an alternative email address was provided in an automated reply, and Foley’s query regarding the 50 potholes has been forwarded by Fourways Review.

Daphne Mokwena from Eskom said she will be in touch with Foley to find out the cause when approached for comment.

The article will be updated once a response is received.
