EFC fighter Simbarashe ‘Simba’ Hokonya has shared a heartfelt message with supporters, after being involved in a serious accident that left him with a severe leg injury and facing a long road to recovery.
Hokonya said he was coming from training and heading to his home in Waterfall when the incident occured, just days before Christmas. He said the accident resulted in a significant injury to his leg, forcing him to step away from work and focus fully on healing.
While grateful to be recovering, he said the incident has brought unexpected financial strain, particularly related to physiotherapy and ongoing recovery support. “I’m unable to work as I normally would. Even now I am unable to train my clients because that is what I do when I am not fighting.”

In response, friends have rallied around the EFC athlete with a BackABuddy campaign launched to assist him during this challenging period.
The fundraising initiative was organised by Shan Speers, who provided further details on the extent of Hokonya’s injuries. According to Speers, Hokonya suffered four severe fractures to his tibia, requiring surgery. “He now faces a long and challenging road to recovery.”

The campaign aims to raise R75 000 to help cover medical expenses, including hospital costs, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy, as well as to support Hokonya financially over the next few months while he is unable to work.
So far, he has raised R28 000, and appeals for more support from his fans. “It’s really important that he receives the right rehabilitation over the coming months, so he can heal properly and make a strong, safe return to fighting and continue his career in the cage,” said Speers.

“This support will allow him to focus on healing without the added stress of financial strain.”
Speers also described Hokonya as someone known for his generosity and willingness to help others. “Anyone who knows Simba knows he has a heart of gold. He is always there for others, ready to help in any way he can. Now it’s our turn to show up for our champ.”
Hokonya thanked supporters for the love shown so far, and encouraged those who are unable to donate to share the campaign or keep him in their prayers. He said he gets his strength from Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Supporters wishing to contribute can do so via the BackABuddy campaign titled ‘Simba’s Comeback Campaign’, where donations of any size are welcomed. Sharing the campaign is also encouraged as another meaningful way to assist.
