Robyn Street bend sparks safety concerns after repeated crashes
Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana is calling on Johannesburg Roads Agency to urgently address unsafe road conditions on Robyn Street in Jukskei after multiple accidents saw vehicles crash into a resident’s property due to poor signage.
Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana has raised serious concerns over dangerous road conditions on Robyn Street in Jukskei, where repeated accidents have left residents fearing for their safety.
Santana recently visited the site, highlighting the lack of proper road signage and traffic calming measures at what he describes as a hazardous bend. According to Santana, several vehicles have crashed through a residential property wall over the years due to motorists being unaware of the sharp turn.
“We’ve had multiple accidents going through the residence wall there because of a lack of proper signage and lack of measures to slow vehicles down within this corner.
“This bend, for me, is extremely dangerous. We’ve had multiple accidents throughout the years literally going through the wall into the residence.”
Santana said he has now requested engineers from Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to assess the area and provide possible safety solutions. These include the installation of proper road signage, flashing warning signs, and reflective road studs to alert motorists to the sharp bend. “Even flashing reflectors on the road itself, particularly red reflectors, could help show motorists that this is a sharp bend and encourage them to slow down.”
Santana, who has served as councillor for 13 years, said he has raised the matter repeatedly with relevant officials, including during an on-site meeting held in September last year. Residents have also attempted to implement their own safety measures.

One homeowner has built a sand embankment to prevent vehicles from entering his property. However, Santana believes this has unintentionally worsened the situation. “The sand embankment unfortunately creates a ramp rather than a preventative barrier.“
Santana is now calling for the installation, or replacement, of Armco barriers along the bend to provide additional protection for residents and to improve road safety.
