Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said it is aware of safety concerns at the sharp bend on Robyn Street in Jukskei Park, and it has conducted several site visits to investigate the matter.
JRA’s acting head of department, Sipho Nhlapo, confirmed that traffic engineers from the entity’s mobility and freight unit have been on site numerous times following reports of vehicles crashing at the sharp bend.
He said the agency is not aware of any formal requests for traffic calming measures along Robyn Street, and added that residents have placed sandbags where the guardrail had previously been damaged.

According to Nhlapo, early warning signs indicating the sharp bend were installed some time ago. However, a request has now been forwarded to the relevant depots to install edge lines, replace the damaged guardrail, and seek approval for the installation of flashing warning lights.
Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana said, “We’ve had multiple accidents going through the residence wall [23 Robyn Street] there because of a lack of proper signage and a lack of measures to slow vehicles down at this corner.”

He is calling on JRA to install proper road signage, flashing warning signs, and reflectors to alert motorists to the sharp bend.

“Even flashing reflectors on the road itself, particularly red reflectors, could help show motorists that this is a sharp bend and encourage them to slow down.”
Santana, who has served as a councillor for 13 years, said he has raised the matter repeatedly with relevant officials, including during an on-site meeting held in September last year.
