Debris and pollution spark concern in Paulshof Spruit Park

Residents are raising alarm over debris and litter piling up at a bridge in Paulshof Spruit Park, worsening pollution along the riverbanks.

What should be a peaceful stretch of green along the river at Paulshof Spruit Park is raising concern among residents.

Growing piles of debris, pollution along the riverbanks, and the emergence of an informal recycling area threaten the beautiful river.

During a recent visit to the park, piles of waste and branches could be seen building up against the bridge structure, partially blocking the flow of the river.

Resident Andrew Mokoena said the debris, which includes plastic, clothing, and other refuse, is likely being washed downstream through storm water systems before becoming trapped at the bridge.

“This used to be a beautiful natural space, where people came to walk their dogs and enjoy nature. Now, the riverbanks are full of rubbish and it looks like a dumping site.”

Mokoena expressed concern that the build-up of debris could create further environmental risks if not addressed. “When debris piles up against the bridge it blocks the flow of water. If we get heavy rains, it could easily cause flooding or push even more pollution further down the river.”

He also pointed to the emergence of what appears to be an informal recycling operation near the river, where waste materials, such as plastic bottles, metal, cardboard, and other discarded items, have been collected and sorted in piles close to the water.

He believe the activity is contributing to increased litter and pollution in the surrounding area. “It looks like an informal recycling centre is being set up near the river. While recycling is important, doing it right next to the water is causing more mess and pollution.”

Large sections of the riverbanks are now visibly dirty, with plastic packaging, household waste, and other debris scattered along the edges of the waterway.
