Team manager Obinna Nwobodo said the Diepsloot community scholarship programme was inspired by the need to support young footballers with potential and provide them with a safe and positive environment. “The programme was inspired by the need to create opportunities for talented young footballers who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and may not otherwise have access to structured football development. We saw many talented children in Diepsloot who simply needed guidance, support, and a positive environment to grow, both on and off the field.”

The programme currently supports 14 young players from Diepsloot, who train weekly at the academy’s facilities and participate in matches through the initiative. “We look at both talent and the child’s circumstances. The focus is on children who are committed, passionate about football, and in need of support to continue developing.”
The initiative was specifically aimed at supporting young people from Diepsloot. “Diepsloot has a lot of talented young people, but many of them lack access to resources, facilities, and exposure. We wanted to create a pathway for these children to develop their football abilities, while also keeping them focused, disciplined, and motivated through sport.”

Beyond football, the academy says the programme is helping keep children away from crime and negative influences by providing them with a constructive environment during afternoons and weekends. “Some players who were previously struggling with motivation now show commitment, improved behaviour, and greater belief in themselves because they feel supported and valued through the programme.”

Despite the programme’s positive impact, funding remains one of the academy’s biggest challenges. “At the moment, the academy relies mainly on monthly payments and limited resources to keep the programme running. Previously, we were able to cover both transport and food for the players, but due to financial constraints, we can currently only manage transport costs.
“Proper football equipment helps the children feel included, professional, and confident while participating in the sport. Supporting youth development is not only about football; it’s about building a better future for the next generation.”
The academy is calling on businesses and residents to support the initiative through sponsorships, donations, football kits, equipment, meals, or financial contributions. They can be contacted at info@championsacademysa.co.za and 064 845 5928
