Frustrated Lonehill resident says Joburg Water ignores leak complaints
A Lonehill homeowner says a persistent underground leak has turned his property into a swamp and caused structural damage, but Joburg Water has yet to take action despite years of complaints.
For the past four years, Lonehill resident Lindile Mhlana has battled ongoing water leaks on his property, and claimed Joburg Water (JW) had repeatedly failed to address the issue.
“When we moved here four years ago, we noticed the ground was always damp,” he said. “We reported it several times to Joburg Water, and while one small leak was eventually repaired, the main source of the problem was never fixed.”
Mhlana said that despite numerous complaints and follow-ups, JW had closed his logged calls twice without visiting the property. “They sent an SMS saying the matter is resolved, but no one has ever come to inspect the site.”

The constant moisture, he added, had begun damaging his boundary wall and parts of his house. “It’s serious now, I even started digging along the wall myself and found a shocking amount of water. I just need them to come test it so we can know if it’s from their pipes or a groundwater issue.”

Mhlana said his attempts to escalate the matter have been met with silence. “They told me to get a plumber, but how can I do that without knowing the source? This is clearly coming from their [JW’s] main pipe.”
Fourways Review reached out to Joburg Water spokesperson Nolwazi Dlamini, who acknowledged the inquiry and said, “If the leak is inside the property, it is the resident’s responsibility.”
