Residents call for pipe replacement after repeated bursts on Peltier Drive

Residents and local leaders say ongoing leaks on Peltier Drive in Sunninghill point to failing infrastructure rather than one-off incidents.

Frustration is growing among Sunninghill residents as repeated pipe bursts along Peltier Drive continue with no sign of a lasting solution.

The latest incident on March 17 has once again left infrastructure exposed, with both pipes and electricity cables visible, raising safety concerns among residents and road users.

According to Tracey Kensey from Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association, the issue is far from new.

She said the pattern of recurring pipe bursts points to a deeper infrastructure problem.

“This is not an isolated incident. We have been dealing with repeated pipe bursts on Peltier Drive for over two years now, sometimes as often as twice a month. It is clear that the issue goes beyond simple repairs; the infrastructure is failing and needs a more permanent solution.”

She also added that the ongoing cycle of repairs has not only disrupted the water supply but also damaged the road surface and surrounding infrastructure. Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy called for intervention, urging Joburg Water to reconsider its approach.

“We cannot continue with temporary fixes while residents are experiencing repeated disruptions. I am appealing to Joburg Water to seriously consider replacing the affected pipes to bring a long-term solution to this ongoing problem,” said Reddy.

He added that continued leaks not only inconvenience residents but also place additional strain on municipal resources.

Fourways Review reached out to Joburg Water on March 20, and Phakamani Ndlovu acknowledged the inquiry. “We will provide a response within our standard turnaround time of 48 hours, depending on the complexity of the matter and the input required from relevant technical departments”
