Local equestrian is jumping higher and higher
Gabi Carnell is making waves in the equestrian world, with her impressive skills in show jumping and equitation, and her two beloved horses, Niles and Cody, by her side.
In the equestrian world, where elegance meets adrenaline, Gabi Carnell (17) is carving out her path in the competitive landscape of show jumping and equitation.
With an unwavering passion for horseback riding, Gabi showcases her talent atop her trusted companions, Niles and Cody, as she tackles challenging courses and earns accolades at every turn.
Gabi‘s journey into the sport began when she was ten. “It was the only sport I hadn’t tried yet, and I fell in love with it.”
Growing up, Gabi was inspired by her mother’s nostalgic tales of her own riding experiences. This familial connection to the sport ignited Gabi’s passion and set her on the path to becoming an accomplished equestrian.

Her partners in this journey are her two horses: Niles, who she’s been with for four years, forming a strong bond of trust, and Cody, a newer addition to the team, arriving just this past August. “Cody and I are still getting to know each other, but I love them both so much.”
Gabi trains under the guidance of Claudia Graunke, her coach, who plays an integral role in her equestrian journey. “Claudia is very encouraging, but she also knows when to push me or when we just need to have some fun.”
One of Gabi’s standout moments in her career came during a recent competition at the Fourways Riding Centre, where she achieved her first win on Cody, while also securing victory in another class with Niles.
Beyond the thrill of competition, Gabi treasures the friendships she has forged in the riding community. “The bonds we make at the yard, or different venues, are incredible. We all love supporting each other,” she said.

Equestrian life has not only shaped Gabi’s skills in the saddle but has also significantly impacted her outside of the sport. “Being a rider has uplifted my mood and motivated me to be the best version of myself.”
Gabi looks up to several role models in the equestrian world, especially her coach Claudia, who is an excellent rider and inspiring person.
Other influences include accomplished riders like Nicole Horwood and Ronny Healy, whose beautiful riding and positive mindsets resonate with her.
Gabi encourages those interested in taking up riding: “Never put pressure on yourself or compare yourself to others.
“Everyone progresses at their own pace. Just because you may not be jumping as high as someone else does not make you less of a wonderful rider.”
Gabi is undoubtedly a rising star in the equestrian community, and as she continues to develop her skills and pursue her passion, her journey is one to watch.
