Dainfern College’s camp sets the tone for high school success

At the annual Dainfern College Grade 8 camp, the Grade 12 students lead by example, guiding their younger peers to fully embrace their transformative high school journey.

The annual Grade 8 camp at Dainfern College is more than just an outdoor activity; it’s an experience that sets the tone for a student’s high school journey.

With its unique blend of team-building exercises, leadership development, and school spirit, this camp has become an important part of the college’s tradition of growth and belonging.

But how does this camp experience shape the students’ social and emotional development, and what impact does it have on their future academic and sporting endeavours? Jarrod Jones, head of Grade 8 at the school, explained. “Each has their own focus. For example, our Grade 9 camp focuses on adventure, and our Grade 11 camp has a strong leadership component. Our Grade 8 camp is a unique welcome camp, and is more than just an outdoor experience; it is the foundation upon which our students build their high school journey. The camp is uniquely designed to ease the transition into high school by fostering connections, instilling school values, and igniting a sense of belonging.

“Stepping into high school can be daunting, but this camp provides our Grade 8 students with a meaningful introduction to the Dainfern College way of life. Through the activities planned, the leaders highlight the important pillars of our school: being academics, service, and leadership.

“Students also immerse themselves in our rich school spirit, through war cries, interhouse bonding, and the ever-present energy of our houses: Griffin, Kraken, and Phoenix. By the time they return to class, they feel empowered, confident, and ready to take on the challenges of high school.”

The camps have an impact on the learners, Jones said. Beyond the excitement of challenges and games, this camp has a profound impact on the students’ social and emotional development.

“The presence of our matric leaders provides an immediate sense of mentorship and support, ensuring that every Grade 8 feels seen, valued, and part of a larger family. The friendships formed during this camp, both within their grade and with the leaders, create a foundation of trust, support, and camaraderie that carries through their high school years.
