City Power installs high mast street lights on dangerous dark Fourways intersections
Winnie Mandela Drive is set for a safety upgrade as high mast lights are going to be installed on a number of hazardous intersections.
The notorious Uranium, Robert Bruce, and Broadacres intersections on Winnie Mandela Drive have long been a source of concern for motorists and residents, with faulty traffic lights and a lack of street lighting contributing to a number of accidents, this according to David Foley, the councillor of Ward 94.
However, relief is on the way, and it is all thanks to Foley’s tireless efforts. He successfully lobbied for the installation of high mast street lights at these treacherous intersections.
He said City Power has given the green light, and city officials have begun excavation work, paving the way for a safer and more secure driving experience for all.

“I am happy that the team have already started with the excavation work. It shows that it won’t take them long. I have made requests for these lights to be installed on these three intersections because of how dark it gets for motorists to drive at night because there are no street lights and the traffic lights are usually not working.
“We have had quite a number of bad accidents as a result. The power utility agreed when I requested them to install these solar high mast street lights, and they allocated three to me and we positioned them.”
He said the installation process is not a lengthy one and would not take way too much time. “The roads will be a lot safer,” said Foley.
When asked how the high mast lights are going to be protected from vandalism, since it is quite an issue in the area, Foley said they are 20m high, and that because it is a solar mast. There are no cables around it, making them not useful for thieves.
“If someone wants to chop something off, it is going to take them a lot of time to figure out what they are going to do because it is very high.”
