615kg of e-waste collected in successful Fourways Gardens recycling drive

The estate took a big leap towards sustainability, collecting many items of e-waste as part of celebrating Global Recycling Day.

Recycling is crucial for mitigating the harmful effects of pollution, conserving natural resources, and reducing landfill waste.

Electronic waste, in particular, poses serious threats to the environment, with millions of tonnes generated globally each year.

On Global Recycling Day, March 18, the Fourways Gardens Estate community came together with Whole Earth Recycling to collect 615kg of e-waste, taking a step towards a more sustainable future.

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic devices such as computers, phones, televisions, and appliances.

Some devices contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can pollute soil, air, and water, harm human health, especially children and pregnant women, and contaminate food chains.

Whole Earth Recycling, an organisation that lives and breathes education about recycling while creating employment, collects recycling weekly in Fourways Gardens.

On Global Recycling Day (March 18), a collaboration between the organisation and the estate to collect an extra haul of recycling was an obvious decision, according to Francois Grobler, the estate’s community activations and events specialist.

Carmen Jordaan, the founder of Whole Earth Recycling said e-waste recycling was important. “Globally, millions of tonnes of electronic waste are generated every year and this all has to go somewhere. E-waste contains harmful substances that can pollute the environment so it’s important to recycle it responsibly to ensure that it doesn’t end up in the surrounding environment or landfills.”

Grobler added, “While some passersby couldn’t resist the urge to test electronic items that were put out for recycling, we can confidently say that the Global Recycling Day Electronic and E-Waste recycling drive was a success.
