Councillor Foley elated as solar-powered lights glow up Winnie Mandela Drive

The first light is already shining bright at the intersection of Winnie Mandela and Robert Bruce Road, with two more to follow.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley is beaming with joy after the first of three high-mast solar panel lights on Winnie Mandela Drive had been installed.

He said the installation by the city was a great milestone in enhancing road safety and visibility on this notoriously hazardous stretch.

The first installation was at the intersection of Winnie Mandela Drive and Robert Bruce Road, with the other two to be erected at the intersections of Uranium Road and Broadacres Drive.

“I am very happy that they are being installed as they will improve visibility and safety in and around the intersections from a motorist and pedestrian perspective. The high-mast solar-powered lights have cost the city around R620 000 each from start to finish. But because they work on solar, there are no electricity charges thereafter.”

While celebrating this achievement, Foley acknowledged that other areas in Ward 94 required similar attention. He vowed to continue advocating for improvements, stating that he would raise these concerns during the next budget cycle.

“The city has only allocated me these three, but Main Road and the R55 also require them at various intersections.”

When asked if the lights would be subject to vandalism since it was quite an issue in the area, Foley said they were 20m high, and because they were solar, there were no cables to steal.

“If someone wants to chop something off, it is going to take them a lot of time to figure out what they are going to do because it is very high.”
