A ton of difference, SteriOne organisation’s glass recycling efforts pay off
The organisation uses glass recycling in their efforts to support pet owners who cannot afford veterinary care by providing sterilisation services, food, kennels, medical treatments, and education.
Glass is a versatile material, used in a wide range of applications, from packaging and construction to electronics and renewable energy.
However, its fragility also comes with risks, as broken glass can cause injuries and environmental hazards.
Despite these challenges, the importance of glass recycling cannot be overstated. Now, glass recycling is also lending a hand to the sterilisation of pets, as the SteriOne organisation, based in Sunninghill, takes on the daunting task of collecting and processing broken glass with a unique blend of dedication, passion, and environmental stewardship.

The organisation’s chairperson, Kaylene Ferreira, said they started recycling glass in 2018 as a way to raise money for their work. Today, they have a dedicated glass skip at Bedfordview Veterinary Hospital. “We have a mission to sterilise pets of those who cannot afford vets. We also assist with food, kennels, medical treatments, and education.
“We rely on our community to place their glass in the skip. If it is broken it makes the skip heavier and our payout better.”
Ferreira said their team in Sunninghill recently did a good job by collecting and delivering a ton of broken glass to their skip. “We are in awe of your hard work and passion. Collecting and carting glass is one of the more difficult jobs.”

With plans to continue their good work, and grow, they’re sticking to glass recycling for the moment. “We only do glass, as we are a rather small team. Our biggest support comes from the Sunninghill team. They also return refundable bottles to Makro and deposit the money in our account.”
