Transgender DJ is ready to shake up the amapiano music scene

DJ Kueen is on a mission to redefine the music landscape in South Africa. As one of the first transgender women DJs, she's not only aiming to rock the decks; she's aiming to inspire others with her story of resilience and authenticity.

Selaelo Vilanculos, known by her stage name ‘DJ Kueen’, is poised to carve out her place in the amapiano music scene as one of the first transgender woman DJs in South Africa.

With aspirations to not only rock the decks but also educate and inspire, Kueen’s journey is a testament to self-discovery through art.

As she prepares to take her rightful place in the spotlight, Kueen is not just spinning records; she’s spinning a powerful narrative of acceptance and change.

Kueen has always had a passion for music, ignited while working as a waiter at a local restaurant, where she found inspiration in the rhythms and beats spun by various DJs, especially female trailblazers. “I’ve always had a love for music. Working at a restaurant, I found inspiration from certain DJs. I just fell in love with their craft.”

As she embarks on her musical journey, Kueen acknowledges both the rewards and challenges that come with being a transgender woman artist in the industry. “It has its pros and cons, but honestly, the love and acceptance I’ve been getting have been able to overrule all the negativity.”

One of Kueen’s career highlights came when she had the opportunity to headline a show alongside renowned DJ Maphorisa. “That was epic. The plan is to produce some music, and possibly be in the history books. I don’t want to talk much, but I’m cooking something.”

Kueen’s vision extends beyond her aspirations. She aims to be a beacon of hope for others in the LGBTQ+ community who may be struggling with their identities or ambitions. “They must stay true to themselves and always stay humble. Giving in is not an option.”

Reflecting on her coming out journey, Kueen noted that while it had its challenges, the love and support she received were transformative. “I chose to look at the positive aspect of my whole journey. When I came out, it took a bend, but the love I got was amazing.”

“It’s a lot, to be honest, but I’m excited to make a change and impact others who want to do it but have been scared. I aim to educate them at the same time.”

As she continues to break barriers and build her legacy, Kueen embodies the spirit of courage and creativity, inspiring those around her to embrace their true selves and express their passions unapologetically.
