NGI students bring joy to Douglasdale seniors
Through music, poetry, and connection, Newbridge Graduate Institute students lit up Douglasdale Retirement Village, proving that age is no barrier to friendship, laughter, and meaningful exchange.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Newbridge Graduate Institute (NGI) Fourways campus spent a special morning at Douglasdale Retirement Village, in a collaboration of intergenerational connection through music, poetry, and connection.
This visit formed part of NGI’s ongoing SUSTAIN community engagement initiatives. The students brought the Douglasdale hall to life as they showcased their musical and vocal talents, entertaining and spending time with the residents.

The initiative aligns with NGI’s core values, empowering student leaders and uplifting the community: focusing on seven key principals: Service, by supporting communities, Unity, building long lasting relationships, Sustainability through environmental responsibility, Teaching by educating for impact, Advocacy by promoting engagement, Impact through creating meaningful change, and Networking by expanding their reach. These principles guide NGI’s outreach efforts and ensure that each project contributes holistically to both institutional goals and community upliftment.

The residents welcomed the students with open arms and warm cappuccinos, creating a cosy environment where new bonds of friendship formed. The day’s programme commenced with beautiful musical performances, including soulful singing and a moving violin recital that captivated the audience and filled the room with emotion. This was followed by a moving poetry reading, as students spoke words from the heart to celebrate the beauty of life, time and sharing time and memories with the older generation.
These were not just performances but shared emotional experiences for all residents who participated by sharing some amazing stories and insights with the students.

“Today was more than just another day – it was a gift. Every moment spent listening to the folks’ stories, wisdom, and laughter has left an imprint on my heart. Each wrinkle told a story, every smile was a bridge between generations, and your life lessons shimmered in the simplest conversations. I came today thinking I was only going to sing and entertain, but I left thinking you have given me something invaluable: perspective, patience, and a deeper sense of gratitude,” said Aphiwe Msomi of NGI Fourways.
As the day came to a close, the residents of the Douglasdale Retirement Village had one simple request: “Please come back again soon.” The students had such a great time and said they would like to come back and visit soon, and this time with more memorable melodies to share.
