185 ‘Meals-in-a-Bag’ and counting, youth volunteers keep giving those in need

They may be young, but their hearts and donations are huge. These teen volunteers just handed over 185 meal packs and more to Kids Haven.

What began as a simple act of kindness has blossomed into a sustained mission of compassion, led by four young change makers.

Over a year ago, in 2023, Matteo Williams, Mikhail Maharaj, Zidane Casim, and his sister Ayla, learners at Curro Douglasdale, set out to give back to those in need. Today, their journey with Kids Haven, a non-profit organisation, is not only ongoing but stronger than ever.

From packing their very first ‘meal in a bag’ parcels and spending time with the children at the shelter, to organising Easter egg drives and furniture donations, the group has continued to find meaningful, hands-on ways to support.

Most recently, in June, they collected ingredients and prepared an impressive 185 meal-in-a-bag parcels, along with donating 10kg of rice, all delivered with love and purpose.

Now entering their teenage years and preparing for high school, these young volunteers remain committed to deepening their impact and finding new ways to uplift their community.

“What started as something small that my sister Xenia and I decided to do together has become something that brings me so much joy. Seeing how much it helps others just makes me want to do more.

“When my friends Mikhail and Zidane joined in, along with Zidane’s little sister Ayla and our friend Tebo, it gave me even more motivation. The fact that my friends and family want to be involved makes it feel even more special, and I’m excited to keep growing it with them,” said Matteo.

He said most of their ideas come from Kids Haven and the needs they share with them.

“They let us know what would make the biggest difference, and we try our best to help meet those needs. Whether it’s food, clothing, furniture, or school supplies, we try to think of simple but effective ways to collect and donate what’s needed.

Mikhail said the visit to Kids Haven was one of the best days. He said Matteo, their sisters, and he went there about a year ago, and spending time with the kids brought them so much joy.

“Knowing that all the work we’ve done was helping real children just like us made everything feel real and important. It made me want to do even more, not just for them, but with them. They’re so kind, fun, and full of life.”

Zidane is new to the group and joined with his sister Ayla, but they can already see how even the smallest things they do can make a big difference.

“Whether it’s donating clothes or just showing up to help, people appreciate it. I think it shows others that kids can help too; we don’t have to wait to be adults to make a difference. Being part of this has shown me how one small act can bring a big smile.”
