What started in 2002 with just over 100 participants, has grown into one of the most beloved fixtures on the suburb’s calendar.

This year’s turnout exceeded expectations, with organisers originally anticipating 500 entries, but celebrating well over 700 runners and walkers.

“This race has always been about community,” said Shelly Otter of Otter Estates. “We host it because Lonehill has supported us for so long. It’s about getting everyone together, having fun, and making memories.”

The event, which coincided with heritage weekend, saw many participants adding a cultural flair to their running gear, from beaded accessories to proudly South African flags. Families pushed prams, joggers ran alongside their dogs, and the sound of laughter filled Calderwood Drive.

Beyond the running, the fun run delivered its trademark mix of local flavour. Delicious food stalls offered bacon-and-egg rolls, boerewors, and fresh coffee, while participants eagerly dug into the popular goody bags, filled with treats from local businesses.

Lucky draw prizes also added excitement, with contributions from businesses such as Crawford, Sorbet, Pick n Pay, Baboy’s, Engen Garage, Run Walk for Life, and even the Pretoria-based sports brand SOX footwear, who partnered for the first time.

“We bought all the socks from them, and they made the most gorgeous prizes,” said Otter.

Support for the event came from the Lonehill Residents Association (LRA), HBGSchindlers, Fidelity Security, SLA Medical, and JMPD, ensuring safety and smooth organisation.

Popular broadcaster John Walland once again kept the atmosphere lively as MC and announcer.

Reflecting on the success, Otter praised the collective spirit. “It was amazing. The turnout was more than we expected, and it’s been absolutely marvellous. Everyone just gets together, helps out, and it boosts the whole community.”
