Lonehill resident battles four-year water leak

A Lonehill homeowner has been living with a constant water leak that has left his property damp and his boundary walls cracking, with Joburg Water repeatedly closing his calls without proper site inspections or explanations.

Lonehill resident Lindile Mhlana said he has been fighting a losing battle against persistent underground water leaks on his property for the past four years.

“When we moved here, the stand was already wet. We reported it to Joburg Water multiple times, but the issue was never properly resolved.

The lawn outside is always green, and if you dig even a little on the pavement, you’ll find water,” said Mahlala.

According to Mhlana, Joburg Water has closed his logged calls twice without conducting a site visit or providing reasons.

“They just close the calls and send SMSes saying the issue was resolved. But nothing has changed; in fact, the leaks are now causing structural problems in both my boundary wall and the house itself.”

He added that while a leaking water meter was eventually repaired after persistent follow-ups, the underlying issue, suspected to be a burst or damaged underground pipe, remains unaddressed.

“They told me to get a plumber, but how can I if they won’t come and confirm whether it’s from their main line or groundwater?

All I want is for them to come and test the water so I can know what to do.”

In his frustration, Mhlana has taken it upon himself to dig alongside his boundary wall, uncovering what he describes as a ‘shocking amount of water’ seeping from the ground.

When Fourways Review contacted Joburg Water spokesperson Nolwazi Dlamini for comment, she acknowledged receiving the inquiry and responded, “I’m on site today.

I’ll take a look at your query tomorrow.”

More information will be provided once it becomes available.
