Pipe fixed but danger remains as Paulshof repair site left open

Residents are frustrated that after repairing the weeks long leak, the repair site has been left open, posing safety and environmental risks.

After weeks of water gushing into Klip river, Johannesburg Water (JW) has finally repaired the pipe burst at the corner of Stonehaven Street and Brackenhill Street in Paulshof.

However, residents say the job remains incomplete, with the site left open and unsafe.

Resident Neil Garrard said while the community is relieved that the leak has finally been fixed, the condition of the site is concerning.

“The pipe has been repaired, but the area has been left open and un-restored. It’s a hazard for pedestrians and vehicles, and it’s disappointing to see the same issue happen every time.

They fix the pipe but don’t finish the job properly.”

“This has been happening for years. The same spot keeps bursting because they never backfill properly. Every few months we go through the same problem, the pipe bursts, water runs for hours, and then they leave the site open after the repair.

“If they don’t backfill and compact the ground properly, we’ll be back here in a few months with another burst.”

Garrand said the lack of urgency from city departments adds to their frustration, especially as Johannesburg continues to face water shortages and infrastructure challenges.

The Fourways Review reached out to JW spokesperson Nolwazi Shabalala on October 10 for comment regarding when the site will be properly restored and what steps are being taken to prevent further leaks.

More information will be provided once it becomes available.
