Paulshof residents upset about Stonehaven and Brackenhill streets excavation

After weeks of water flowing into the Klip River, the burst pipe at the corner of Stonehaven and Brackenhill streets has finally been repaired, but residents say the open, unfinished site remains a danger and a long-standing frustration.

Residents in Paulshof are growing increasingly frustrated after Johannesburg Water (JW) repaired a burst pipe on the corner of Stonehaven and Brackenhill streets, but left the site open and unsafe.

Resident Neil Garrard said while the community was glad the water leak had stopped, the incomplete work highlighted ongoing problems with poor workmanship.

“The pipe has been repaired, but the area has been left open and un-restored. It’s a hazard for pedestrians and vehicles, and it’s disappointing to see the same issue happen every time. They fix the pipe but never finish the job properly.”

He added that this was not a one-time issue but a recurring problem. “This has been happening for years. The same spot keeps bursting because they never backfill properly. Every few months, we go through the same problem: the pipe bursts, water runs for hours, and then they leave the site open after the repair.”

Garrard said the lack of urgency from city departments had increased residents’ frustration, especially as Johannesburg continues to face severe water shortages and crumbling infrastructure.
