Douglasdale police shut down shebeens, 1 for supplying liquor to minors, arrest 17
As the festive season begins, Douglasdale SAPS has kicked off its Safer Festive Season operations with arrests, closures, and a clear warning to those breaking the law.
Supplying alcohol to minors landed one licensed establishment in hot water this past weekend, as Douglasdale SAPS launched its Safer Festive Season operations.
Station commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum said the premises were closed for supplying liquor to minors, a reminder that such behaviour is a serious offence.

“It must be brought to the attention of all establishments and parents that supplying a minor with alcoholic beverages is a criminal offence.”
She said the operation forms part of a broader festive season safety campaign aimed at promoting responsible behaviour and keeping communities safe.
“As we enter the festive season, our focus will be responsible drinking, road safety, prevention of robberies, and safety in shopping centres and malls.”
The operation, held on October 24, was a joint effort between SAPS, security companies, and the CPF. “The first focus of the operation was unlicensed shebeens; three were closed. The operation continued with drinking in public, and 17 people were arrested for drinking.”

She added that additional arrests were made for offences ranging from common robbery and assault to possession of drugs.
“These types of operations will be ongoing throughout the festive season,” Arikum said.
Douglasdale SAPS said while crime often spikes this time of year as people relax into holiday mode, this festive season will be different as they will not allow it on their watch.
