Piano prodigy hits all the right notes on her road to Spain and France
Azure Naidu, from Fourways, has struck a winning note, both academically and artistically, studying school work four grades above her age, and earning her place to represent South Africa in Spain and France at the international performing arts competition next year.
At just eight years old, Azure Naidu hit all the right notes on her piano recently at the Talent Africa National Championships.
There, she won two gold medals for her performances in both the classical and contemporary piano categories. She also received a special award for best junior technique as an instrumentalist, an honour that highlights her exceptional skill and maturity as a performer.
Azure’s achievements earned her Federation of Performing Arts South Africa (FPASA) provincial colours for performing arts, and she will now go on to represent South Africa internationally in Spain and France in 2026, obtaining her South African colours. “I felt ecstatic because I reached my goal. This reminded me that dedication leads to success.”

For her classical piece, she performed Fur Elise by Beethoven, and for her contemporary piece, Clocks by Coldplay. “I love the history behind Fur Elise, and who doesn’t love a bit of Coldplay? Their music is magical.”
Azure’s love for the piano began when she was just four years old, after receiving a red mini grand piano for Christmas. Recognising her daughter’s natural interest, Azure’s mother, Dr Tania Reddy, enrolled her in piano lessons soon after her fifth birthday.
“Azure is the type of child who has strong follow-through and diligence. She takes ownership of what’s expected of her and shows great reliability. Her confidence and artistry have grown beautifully under the mentorship of her piano teacher, Allan Horsefield, and she practices diligently for 30 to 45 minutes a day.”
Azure’s talents extend beyond music. She’s also a maths and English whiz. She is a Grade 3 learner from Crawford International Fourways, but is currently studying Grade 7 work through the Kumon Fourways Centre. Her Kumon instructor, Sophia Kyprianides, has been instrumental in guiding Azure’s advanced progress.

Earlier this year, Azure was chosen to represent South Africa at the Kumon Global Student Conference, where she interacted with young learners from around the world. “It was an amazing experience. I got to share ideas and learn from other students.”

Despite her busy schedule, Azure said her parents maintain her healthy balance.
“My parents help me plan my time carefully, so I can give my best to both schoolwork and piano. Playing the piano helps me clear my mind after studying.”
Her parents ensure that Azure remains grounded and joyful through it all. “We encourage her to stay focused on her goals and to celebrate her progress,” said Reddy.
“At the same time, we make sure she enjoys the simple joys of childhood. Her journey is about more than medals; it’s about growing with joy, balance, and purpose.”
