New cameras keep residents informed of traffic flow in Lonehill

A new live traffic camera system, launched by the Lonehill Residents Association, helps residents plan smarter commutes, while improving neighbourhood safety.

The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) has introduced an exciting new initiative called the Lonehill Live Street Cameras. This system provides residents with real-time views of traffic flow at key intersections throughout the suburb.

Cameras have been installed at several busy locations, including Main and Witkoppen roads, Lonehill Boulevard and Mulbarton Circle, Lonehill Boulevard and Concourse Crescent, Lonehill Boulevard and Crestwood Drive, and Leslie and Turley roads.

The system allows residents to check current traffic conditions before heading out, which helps ease congestion and reduce travel frustration.

“This project started about 11 months ago, to help residents deal with heavy traffic on our streets. Lonehill is a well-known cut-through between Winnie Mandela, Witkoppen, and Main roads, often leading to gridlock.

The Traffic Cam gives residents a clear look at road conditions, so they can plan their trips better,” said Keith Rampton, general manager of the LRA.

Developed in partnership with Fidelity, the Traffic Cam is part of a larger network of more than 70 security cameras across Lonehill, Beverley, Pineslopes, and Lonehill Upper East. Managed by Fidelity, the system uses AI-driven analytics that have already helped reduce local crime.

To protect privacy, low-resolution cameras have been used so that only the general traffic flow is visible. The cameras can also record up to 14 days of footage to assist with road safety reviews and incident reporting.

Currently in its beta testing phase, the live feed is open to the public, but full access will soon be available exclusively to LRA members or through a subscription.

“Our goal is to make Lonehill safer, more connected, and easier to navigate. It’s about using technology to improve everyday life for our community,” Rampton added.
