Residents protest after teenager dies in Diepsloot police-related shooting

The community chanted outside the police station to seek clarity over why a case had not been opened for a teenager who died allegedly in a hail of bullets.

Diepsloot residents protested outside the Diepsloot Police Station on March 29, demanding answers from police following allegations that officers shot a 17-year-old boy multiple times.

Vincent Ndou, one of the community members, said the protest was triggered after authorities allegedly refused to open a case, which he said prompted residents to take to the streets outside the station in search of answers and justice.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that the teenager was shot by members of Crime Intelligence during an alleged attempted robbery in Diepsloot Extension 2 on March 28 at about 22:30, during which one officer was shot and injured and another was stabbed.

“It is reported that the teen was together with another man when they allegedly tried to rob the two police officers who were at the time sitting in an unmarked police vehicle.

The other suspect fled the scene, allegedly after stabbing one of the members with a knife. The two members were taken to the hospital for medical attention,” said Muridili.

Muridili confirmed that a case of murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to property has been opened.

The Independent Police Investigation Directorate has been informed,” she added.
