Little Steps market and fun day strikes a balance between education and excitement

Bright stalls and big energy from the Little Steps Pre-School entrepreneurs set the scene at Dairfern College, turning play into profit.

The grounds at Dainfern College came alive with laughter, colour, and the buzz of tiny entrepreneurs as Little Steps Pre-School hosted its much-loved market and fun day.

Now in its ninth year, the event has grown into more than just a day of fun; it has become a cornerstone of the school’s community-building and fundraising efforts.

School principal Melissa Savage said the initiative plays a vital role in enhancing the school’s environment while strengthening relationships among families. “We always use this as a friend-raiser to upgrade our playgrounds. We’ve recently redone our bridge, added Astroturf, and built a pergola. Everything raised here goes towards improving our school.”

She added that plans include investing in LED screens to elevate school concerts, with this year’s production set to be hosted at Emperors Palace. “Beyond infrastructure, this is about creating a continued family environment. Parents are supporting parents, and that sense of community is what makes this day so special.”

She also added that the market day is deeply rooted in the school’s curriculum, giving young learners a hands-on introduction to entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Children from the Grade R classes, aged between four and six, took charge of their own stalls, selling everything from handmade crafts to fun activities. “They learn how money works, how to price their items, cover costs, and make a profit. It’s business planning, maths skills, and entrepreneurship all in one. The best part is they’re developing public speaking skills without even realising it.”

Parent Naz Ebrahim echoed the sentiment, saying the day fosters both social connection and practical learning. “It brings such a great sense of community. We get to know other parents and the surrounding community, which is wonderful.

“In terms of the children, it teaches them about managing finances and understanding the value of money. Of course, at this age, they run around spending it all, but it’s all part of the learning experience.”

With stalls run by enthusiastic little vendors calling out to passersby, the event struck a balance between education and excitement. From come buy my tattoo to hands-on demonstrations of toys and games, the children confidently engaged with customers, showcasing skills far beyond their years.
