JRA assures residents that Hornbill Road repairs will prevent flooding

Agency says the upgraded storm water system near Curro Douglasdale will function effectively now that repairs are complete after months of delays.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has assured residents that the upgraded storm water system on Hornbill Road near Curro Douglasdale will prevent future flooding.

This comes as storm water reconstruction work was completed on April 17, following months of delays.

Acting head of department: regional operations Mpho Maruping confirmed that the work includes the reconstruction of the storm water structure, as well as footway and tar reinstatement. He said delays in the repair process were due to wet weather and the Easter holidays, which affected progress on site.

Maruping said the upgraded infrastructure is expected to function effectively going forward. “The storm water structure is well functioning. No flooding will be experienced.”

The repairs follow a prolonged period of concern raised by Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana, who has been engaging both JRA and Johannesburg Water on the matter for more than 18 months.

According to Santana, the issue began after a pipe burst repair by Johannesburg Water, during which a storm water inlet was damaged.

This left the road prone to flooding during heavy rains, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and ongoing frustration for residents.

Santana also raised concerns about incomplete reinstatement work, repeated damage during repair attempts, and the overall quality of workmanship at the site.

The completion of the project marks a significant step towards resolving the long-standing issue, which has impacted road safety and service delivery in the area.
