Douglasdale residents spend more days without water than with, amid repeated leaks

Residents say months of repeated water leaks, damaged infrastructure, and slow repairs at Westway and Darter Road in Douglasdale have left their neighbourhood disrupted, with calls for greater accountability from municipal departments.

Douglasdale residents said they are spending more days without water than with, due to ongoing leaks and repeated repair work in the area.

The recent issue is at the corner of Westway and Darter roads, which residents describe as a ‘months-long saga.’

On June 11, Fourways Review visited the site of the leak. Resident Chris Neumann, who has been monitoring the situation, said the disruption has become a daily reality for those living in the area.

“This has been a couple-of-months’ saga. There was a major leak here about a month ago, and you can see the water’s been out for some time.

“After the first leak, there was another major one right next to it. It just keeps happening in the same spot.”

Neumann also raised concerns about the way in which repairs were being carried out, saying heavy machinery used during the process caused further damage to the surrounding infrastructure.

“There’s no interdepartmental work between city entities; everything is just left open,” he said.

He also raised concerns about supervision on site during repairs, claiming that work often proceeds without oversight from senior municipal officials.

On June 14, resident Peter Tuerk posted on community groups that he and Ward 103 councillor Chris Santana visited the site.

Santana acknowledged the ongoing challenges, linking the situation to broader infrastructure strain and long-term underinvestment.

“We should have had proper repairs, not waiting for infrastructure to collapse,” he said.

He also indicated that a petition and proposals for infrastructure upgrades would form part of ongoing engagement with the City of Johannesburg.

Joburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency were contacted for comment on June 12, but no response had been received.
