Rogues on Radio launches campaign to tackle abuse behind closed doors
Rogues on Radio has launched the Men Against Abusive Men campaign at Fourways Mall, calling on men to take accountability for abuse and help build safer homes and communities.
A campaign born from a desire to address abuse behind closed doors is calling on men to take responsibility for challenging abusive behaviour in their own homes and communities.
Rogues on Radio has soft-launched its Men Against Abusive Men campaign at Fourways Mall, with station owner Clive Chetty saying the initiative is intended to grow from a local effort into a wider movement.

Chetty said the campaign was prompted in part by the public attention surrounding recent murders in Kempton Park, but that the station wanted to address the less visible forms of abuse that often remain hidden. “There’s been such a noise, and positively so, about the unfortunate incidences in Kempton Park, but that was because, unfortunately, people were being murdered and it was heinous crimes,” Chetty said. “We wanted to do something that talks to the entire community as a whole, because there’s so much hidden stuff in terms of abuse.” He said the campaign was about encouraging men to stop accepting abusive behaviour and to take accountability.

For Rogues on Radio station manager Merl Maria, the campaign carries a deeply personal significance. Maria said she is a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV) and welcomed the decision to create a platform where men could actively stand against abuse. “To me, this is a big part of who I am, because I’m a survivor of GBV for 25 years,” Maria said. “I think it’s absolutely great that men can come together and work together and say that they can actually do something like this.” Maria said she believed change needed to begin in the home, particularly in what children are taught about relationships and respect.

Chetty said the station also wanted the initiative to belong to the community rather than Rogues on Radio alone: “We don’t want to own it ourselves. We are just initiators of it, but we invite corporates to get involved.”
The station said further campaign activities and community collaborations will follow as Men Against Abusive Men develops.
