Safe sports on the road

JOBURG - How to use the road safely.

Louise Addis writes:

I really enjoy seeing all the people out on the roads running and cycling, but then get a big knot in my stomach when they aren’t following basic rules of the road.

I know it’s only because they are not aware of them, so here is a rundown of the rules and why they exist.

Running:

When running you are considered a pedestrian, a general rule is to run on the right-hand side of the road.

You run facing the traffic so you are safe when you come to where roads cross. If you are on the right, you can clearly see any traffic that might impact you.

It’s best to run on the right so you can see how the cars coming towards you are behaving, you can’t see this if they are behind you. If there is a running path do use it, and if it means running on the left then be careful when stepping into the road to cross.

Cycling:

When you are cycling you must behave as a vehicle, ride on the left hand side of the road, this also means stopping at stop streets and traffic lights. Also whenever possible to do safely indicate the direction you are turning.

Always wear a helmet.

Cyclists can ride two abreast, only if it is safe to do so, but just because you can ride two abreast doesn’t always mean you should.

Use common sense or at least the self-preservation instinct here. If you are riding in a built-up area, single file is recommended; if you would like to have a chat with your cycling buddy then go to a spinning class or a more rural area with less traffic.

If you are riding in the early morning, please light your bike up like a Christmas tree, any driver who is on the road at that time won’t be fully awake and needs help spotting you.

Drivers:

There is a law that you have to pass cyclists at 1.5m, yes this will put you into oncoming traffic.

As annoying as cyclists and runners are, they are someone’s child , sister, brother, mother or father.
