Fast and victorious

DAINFERN - Dainfern College pupil Mitchell Sparrow is the fastest junior cyclist in Africa.

Sparrow, who is currently in Grade 12, raced for the South African team at the African Intercontinental Track Cycling Championships in Pietermaritzberg. The Junior Omnium, a multi-race tournament, took up the first two days and consisted of six events from short sprints to endurance races of up to 15 km. On day three, Sparrow raced in the Junior Match Sprint competition. He won both events, earning him two gold medals.

As African Junior Match Sprint Champion, Sparrow is now officially the fastest junior cyclist on the African continent, the title of African Junior Omnium Champion means he is also the best all-round junior track cyclist in Africa.

“As with any sport, cycling involves a huge commitment, lots of sacrifice and many, often lonely, hours of training,” he said.

“Having the opportunity to ride in the South African colours and then hearing our National Anthem and watching the South African flag go up when I was fortunate enough to win, made all the hours of training worthwhile and is a moment I will never forget,” Sparrow said.
