Kyalami equestrian stars have a party

KYALAMI – Top equestrian riders take on mechanical bull at year-end party.

Even equestrian athletes need to rest sometimes, to put their feet up and enjoy a little party to mark the end of a good year.

Körber Equestrian did just that, although its riders could not quite stay off the ‘saddle’ for long.

A spit braai and delicious lunch marked the Kyalami yard’s Christmas and New Year’s party on 19 January.

Some of the top young showjumpers in the area attended, having trained under Rainer Körber, who owns the yard along with his wife Jeanne.

Rainer himself attained a personal ranking of fifth in the country in showjumping this year and aims to change that to number one. “We don’t host shows but we travel to about five or six national shows every year, as well as all the local shows,” he said.

“We have one of the best young riding groups in the country. They all compete at Sanesa [South Africa National Equestrian Schools Association] tournaments at school level and the older riders compete on the World Cup circuit and are holding against the adults nicely.”

In-between the festivities, riders challenged each other to see who could stay on a mechanical bull the longest.

The mechanical bull, provided by Jasyn Gertenbach, flung this way and that trying to throw the riders off.

Of course the machine found more than its match in some excellent riding and if one were keeping score it would be more or less even between the riders and the bull.

In the end, a relaxing and fun time was had by all at a yard more than ready for another year of showjumping.
