SPAR golf day raises R200k

DIEPSLOOT – The Khulani Early Childhood Development Centre received a donation of R200 000 thanks to SPAR South Rand.

A local early childhood development centre in Diepsloot has received a generous donation thanks to SPAR South Rand.

SPAR South Rand recently donated R200 000 to the Khulani Early Childhood Development Centre thanks to funds raised during the 2019 Charity Golf Day that took place on 24 October.

The annual event has become a favourite on the golfing calendar and this year saw more than 132 players attend the charity event at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. The day got started with a two-tee start in the Betterball Stableford format and Beat The Pro with Lejan Lewthwaite. Even though there were a few wet holes on the course, it did not deter the players from giving it their all.

Jerome Jacobs, the divisional marketing director for SPAR South Rand Division thanked the SPAR team and suppliers for making the donation possible. “As one of the leading supermarket groups in the country, we believe it to vitally important we play our part in giving back to the many communities in which we operate. One of our SPAR values is family and we hold this very dear to our hearts. It’s just another way of showing we really do care.”

Jacobs added that it felt amazing and humbling to be able to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

Currently, there are 48 children aged between three and five years old that depend on the Khulani centre. The centre opened its doors in January 2017 and forms part of The Diepsloot Foundation. Currently, the centre provides a nurturing environment with a special focus on educational, nutritional, spiritual and social services for the children from Diepsloot.

Heather Garrett from the Khulani ECD said they were blown away, not only by the value of the cheque but also by the way in which Khulani ECD has been embraced and supported. “We are so excited to receive such an incredible contribution for our project in Diepsloot. We are extremely grateful to SPAR South Rand and all the participants at the SPAR South Rand Golf Day for your ongoing commitment to the work we are doing and look forward to partnering with you to change the lives of children in Diepsloot for many years to come.”

The funds will go towards providing quality foundation level teaching, nutrition and care at R1 000 per child per month. Garrett said they can charge parents R300 per month and this leaves them with a shortfall of R700.

Garrett added that the donation will fund this shortfall for 24 children in 2020 and directly impact 24 young lives. “It is truly an investment, not only in the future of these children but also in their community and country.”
