Local rugby club targets youths

NIETGEDACHT– Malinga said exposing young players to some of the best coaches can give them an edge and help them climb the ladder of success.

In their concerted efforts to help youngsters polish their rugby skills, Northern Cats Rugby Club and HeronBridge College hosted a three-day clinic from 21 to 22 April this year.

Scores of young rugby players from Fourways, Diepsloot and Cosmo City converged at HeronBridge College’s rugby field to have their rugby skills refined by some of the best local coaches.

Mathematics teacher and HeronBridge College rugby team coach, Flash Malinga said exposing young players to some of the best coaches could give them an edge and help them climb the ladder of success in sport.

“Our clinics were targeting U19 to U18 players. Having coaches with great accolades at the clinic helped the boys with some extra skills and confidence. Our main aim through this clinic initiative was to provide rare opportunities to every player we can reach,” he said.

“We had more than 60 young players benefitting from this initiative. We also had players from Nooitgedacht Primary School and some of them came as far as Pretoria to take part in the clinics.”

Malinga added that the club would continue to host rugby clinics to help local youngsters sharpen their skills.

“We are also going to host a 7-a-side tournament during the course of this year.”
