Local organisations empower young women in sports

DIEPSLOOT– Hlaka said her organisation work with various organisations to help young people get access to basic things such as sanitary towels and sports bras.


As part of Women’s Month celebrations, Diepsloot’s non-profit organisations Youth Alive Sports Project and Diepsloot Youth Programme hosted a women’s netball tournament on August 8.
The theme of the tournament was Play with Purpose and was held at Itirele-Zenzele High School.

According to the co-founder of Youth Alive Sports Project Precious Hlaka, her organisation worked with various other organisations to help young people get access to basic items such as sanitary towels and sports bras.

“Our main aim as an organisation is to empower and support young girls in sports in and around Diepsloot community. We do this in order for girls to feel comfortable when playing any sport of their choice and to nurture confidence in them,” she said.

Hlaka added that the tournament attracted many young people with 16 local netball teams participating in the event. She said the main of the tournament was to distribute sanitary towels and sports bras to the players. The items were collected from different donors.
She concluded that they invited Nandi Buthelezi of SABC women’s rugby to encourage and motivate the players.
