Celebrities to plunge for Special Olympians
FOURWAYS – September 18 will see a number of A-list South African celebrities do their part to raise funds for the Special Olympics South Africa national team.
Local celebrities will be doing their part at Altitude Beach in Fourways to raise funds for athletes participating in the upcoming Special Olympics World Winter Games in January next year in Kazan, Russia.
A list of celebrities has been released as to who will be taking part in the fifth annual Special Olympics South Africa (Sosa) Polar Plunge to raise funds for the Sosa national team. Sosa has received overwhelming support from athletes’ family members and corporate South Africa, celebrities and the media in the previous four years.

This year’s Polar Plunge is set to take place on September 18 and participants will plunge into a pool containing five tons of ice. Most participants also commit to a ‘plunge fee’ that goes to Sosa’s various programmes and initiatives.
Some notable celebrities taking part in this year’s Polar Plunge include actor Clint Brink, TV host Lala Hirayama, B-Girl dancer and choreographer Courtnae Paul, former South African footballer Mark Fish and many others.

CEO of Sosa, Ancilla Smith said the yearly event had become a signature event for the organisation as the athletes taking part deserved the same recognition and support as the Paralympic and Olympic Games athletes, as they prepare for Russia next year. “We are overwhelmed by the support that we continue to receive from the participating celebrities, the media and our corporate partners. Outside of the funds that are raised every year, the Plunge showcases a South Africa that is inclusive and accepting of people living with an intellectual disability,” she said.
“Coming in on the heels of the Olympic Games and the upcoming Paralympic games, this year’s Plunge will invite support for our third Olympic national team, the Special Olympics South Africa national team.”
More than R80 000 was raised last year and was used for food parcels for Special Olympic athletes and their families left destitute during the country’s nationwide lockdown.
